Visit from Ohio University’s Virtual Immersive Technologies and Arts for Learning Lab

The IEEE Malaysia Section ITSS Chapter was honored to host a delegation from Ohio University, led by Professor Chang Liu, the esteemed Director of the Virtual Immersive Technologies and Arts for Learning Lab (VITAL Lab). This engagement served as a platform for knowledge exchange and the exploration of potential collaborative research avenues in the domain of intelligent transport systems. The delegate is also accompanied by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering UiTM, Prof. Ir. Dr. Ahmad Farid Abidin.

Showcasing Cutting-Edge Research

During the visit, three prominent members of the IEEE ITSS Chapter—Ir. Dr. Fadhlan Hafizhelmi Kamaru Zaman, Ir. Dr. Syahrul Afzal Che Abdullah, and Ir. Dr. Ng Kok Mun—presented their specialized research and technological advancements to the delegates.

Intelligent Driving Behavior Monitoring System: Ir. Dr. Fadhlan Hafizhelmi Kamaru Zaman introduced the delegates to the innovative Intelligent Driving Behavior Monitoring System. His presentation delved into the sophisticated technological aspects of the system, detailing how advanced sensors, machine learning algorithms, and real-time data analysis are employed to assess and predict driver behavior. He placed significant emphasis on the system’s critical impact on enhancing overall vehicle safety, offering a proactive approach to mitigating road accidents caused by erratic or distracted driving. The discussion highlighted the system’s potential for future integration into fleet management and driver training programs.

Heavy Vehicle Weight Sensor Technology: Ir. Dr. Ng Kok Mun conducted a compelling demonstration of a novel weight sensor technology developed for use with heavy vehicles. This technology is designed to provide highly accurate, real-time estimation of vehicle load. The showcase explained the mechanics and engineering principles behind the sensors, emphasizing their utility in preventing overloading, which is a major contributor to road infrastructure damage and safety hazards. The delegates were particularly interested in the accuracy and robustness of the system in various operational environments.

Outcomes and Future Prospects

The exchange was highly successful, fostering a stimulating intellectual environment. The delegates from Ohio University’s VITAL Lab expressed significant interest in the technologies presented and recognized the high quality of research being undertaken by the IEEE Malaysia Section ITSS Chapter. Following the presentations and interactive discussions, both parties expressed a mutual and strong desire to pursue formal collaboration on future research projects, leveraging the complementary expertise of both institutions in intelligent transport systems and immersive technologies. The potential collaboration is expected to focus on areas where these fields intersect, such as using virtual reality for driver behavior simulation and training.
